Microsoft has announced a major update to its 365 subscription plans for consumers, introducing artificial intelligence tools like Copilot and Microsoft Designer. These features are designed to simplify tasks across popular apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The move marks a significant shift in how Microsoft caters to individual users and families, blending AI into everyday software.

Copilot: Your AI Assistant
Copilot, the centerpiece of this update, is an AI assistant built to handle repetitive or time-consuming tasks. Users can:
- Draft documents.
- Summarize lengthy email threads.
- Generate data insights in Excel.
- Suggest layouts in PowerPoint.
The tool aims to reduce the effort required for common tasks, leaving users to focus on decisions or creative aspects.
Copilot doesn’t just complete tasks—it interacts conversationally, refining its output based on feedback. While this promises convenience, it also raises questions about the learning curve for users unfamiliar with AI.
Microsoft Designer: AI-Powered Visuals
The update also includes Microsoft Designer, an AI tool for creating polished visuals. Users can generate graphics for personal and professional use without needing design skills.
- Create visuals for social media posts, flyers, and more.
- Use templates and customization powered by AI-generated suggestions.
This feature is integrated into apps like PowerPoint and Word, making it easier to add visually appealing elements directly to projects.
Price Hike: The Cost of Innovation
With these new tools comes a price increase. For the first time since Microsoft 365 launched in 2013, subscription costs are rising:
- The Personal plan will now cost $9.99 per month (up from $6.99).
- The Family plan will increase to $12.99 per month (up from $9.99).
- Annual subscriptions will also rise proportionally.
Microsoft justifies the higher prices by pointing to the added AI capabilities, which it says bring significant value. Subscriptions will include monthly credits for using Copilot, ensuring most users can explore the tools without additional charges.
