Applications are open for the MATS Winter 2027 Fellowship, a 12-week programme focused on research and field-building to reduce risks from advanced AI. Fellows receive a $19,200 stipend, research compute, housing, meals and travel support, and international applicants are eligible. Applications close on September 6, 2026.

The MATS Program has opened applications for its Winter 2027 cohort, which will run from January 19 to April 10, 2027.

The programme connects fellows with mentors from organisations including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Redwood Research and the Alignment Research Center (ARC).

Fellows work on independent research projects with support from mentors and the MATS research management team.

Participants completing the full 12-week programme at 40 hours per week receive a $19,200 stipend, equivalent to $1,600 per week.

MATS also provides:

  • $24,000 in research compute
  • housing
  • travel to and from Berkeley or London
  • office space
  • lunch and dinner on weekdays
  • J-1 visa support for non-American participants joining the programme in the US

The main programme takes place in person in Berkeley, California, and London, UK. Remote participation may be possible on a case-by-case basis, depending on the applicant's circumstances and mentor.

International applicants can also participate from the London office, although MATS does not provide UK visa support.

The fellowship normally requires a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.

Looking for support around AI?

We (AImpactful 🙂) work with newsrooms, NGOs, institutions, teams, and individuals who need workshops, advisory support, or content production.

The first stage asks applicants about their background, includes short written responses and requires contact details for two references.

Candidates who progress will complete further evaluations and apply to specific research streams before applications are reviewed by mentors.

Final offers are expected in early to mid-November 2026.

Applicants should also note that MATS does not allow the use of LLMs to write application responses, unless a specific form or work test explicitly says they are permitted.

The general application deadline is September 6, 2026, end of day Anywhere on Earth (AoE).
