Applications are open for the Cambridge ERA:AI Fellowship Winter 2027, a fully funded 10-week research programme focused on AI safety, AI governance and technical AI governance.
The programme starts on 18 January 2027 in Cambridge, UK, and fellows receive a £10,000 stipend, alongside travel expense coverage, visa support and meals during working hours.
Applications close on 13 September 2026 at 11:59pm Anywhere on Earth (AoE).

The fellowship is open to applicants aged 18 and over, with no formal academic or professional eligibility requirements.
ERA is particularly interested in researchers and professionals from fields including technology, policy, law, security and economics who want to work on questions related to increasingly capable AI systems.
Applicants do not need to come from a traditional AI research background.
Fellows develop an individual research project with support from mentors and ERA's research team.
Research falls into three main areas:
- Technical AI Safety, including evaluation, interpretability, robustness, alignment and AI control;
- AI Governance, including regulation, accountability, international cooperation and governance of autonomous AI agents;
- Technical AI Governance, including auditing, monitoring, compute governance, verification and technical standards.
ERA says its fellows have been mentored by researchers from organisations including the University of Cambridge, UK AI Security Institute, Centre for the Governance of AI, RAND Corporation, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic. Mentors differ for each cohort and are matched with fellows after selection.
Top fellows may also have the opportunity to continue their work through ERA's funded Research Scholars programme for six months or longer.
