AlgorithmWatch has launched an open call for its fifth cohort of Algorithmic Accountability Reporting Fellows, inviting journalists and researchers across Europe to apply with story ideas that explore the power dynamics behind the development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

The deadline to apply is September 15, 2025, at 23:59 CET.

The fellowship will run from November 10, 2025, to May 10, 2026, offering each of up to six fellows a €7,400 grant to pursue an investigative reporting or research project.

Participants are expected to produce at least one output, such as a journalistic article, podcast, video feature, or report, and are free to choose their preferred publication outlet. Mentorship and publication support will also be provided, with an in-person kickoff meeting in Berlin.

This round continues the initiative’s focus on AI’s role in shaping societal structures, with a special interest in topics such as:

  • Influence of tech companies on policymaking and regulation
  • Structural discrimination amplified by automated systems
  • Surveillance contracts between governments and private firms
  • Labor exploitation through algorithmic management
  • Political ideologies behind AI governance

Projects must center on real-world consequences of AI, particularly its impact on marginalized groups, public services, and democratic processes.

While technical expertise isn’t required, applicants should demonstrate familiarity with the field of algorithmic accountability and have experience in journalism or research.


The fellowship is open to individuals 18 or older residing in the EU, EFTA states, or EU candidate/former member countries. Applications in English are required, but final outputs may be published in other languages. Joint proposals are accepted and encouraged; funds will be equally split.
