The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have announced a major multi-year licensing agreement that will bring more than 200 characters and visual elements from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars into Sora, OpenAI’s generative video platform. This marks the first time a global entertainment giant has licensed such an extensive library of IP to a generative AI system.
As part of the deal, Disney will also invest $1 billion in OpenAI and become a major customer of OpenAI’s APIs, using them to build new tools, products, and experiences including innovations for Disney+ and internal employee workflows.

What This Means for Users
Under the three-year agreement, Sora will be able to generate short, user-prompted social videos featuring:
- more than 200 characters across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm,
- costumes, props, vehicles, iconic settings,
- beloved worlds such as Frozen, Moana, Toy Story, Inside Out, Encanto, The Lion King, Monsters Inc., Zootopia, and many more,
- animated or illustrated versions of Marvel and Star Wars characters such as Black Panther, Loki, Iron Man, Darth Vader, Yoda, Leia, and others.
A curated selection of Sora-generated fan videos will also be available on Disney+.
The agreement does not include actor likenesses or voices, ensuring that generative content remains separate from performers’ identities and contractual rights.

What This Means for the Industry
The partnership is widely viewed as a historic moment for the intersection of AI and entertainment — not only because of the scale of the licensed IP, but also because Disney and OpenAI explicitly emphasize responsible, human-centered AI.
Both companies have committed to:
- strong safety measures and content controls,
- respecting intellectual property and the rights of creators,
- age-appropriate policies for users,
- protecting individuals’ rights to control the use of their voice and likeness,
- preventing the generation of illegal or harmful content.
This move signals a turning point for how major studios may collaborate with AI companies while safeguarding creative ecosystems.
Statements From Disney and OpenAI

“Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content… This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society.”
When Will It Launch?
Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to begin generating fan-inspired content using Disney’s licensed characters in early 2026.
